Lyman Stock

I come from good stock–solid, salt-of-the-earth type people. Hard working. Down to earth. Laid back. Honest. That's Lyman stock.

Can't you tell?

Forbidden Italian Temptations

The following gelato ad appeared in two magazines before it was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. It was supposed to be a "light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek portrayal" of the "forbidden Italian temptations" that the gelato represented. However, apparently 10 people complained to the ASA and therefore the ad was banned from future use. Personally, I think the funniest part is that the nun has enough eye make-up on to rival Marilyn Manson.

The grass is always greener...

My best friend is currently traveling in the Pacific Northwest. He keeps sending me pictures of the places he is visiting. As beautiful as my home in Italy is, I must admit - I'm a bit jealous!

Icy Plunge

Last weekend, some friends and I went up to the river in Villar Pellice. It was absolutely stunning! The hot sun warmed the rocks and the spray from the waterfall cooled the air. I sat on the rock by the pool at the bottom of the waterfall and watched the swirling currents of icy water (straight from the snowfields on the Alps) bubble and gurgle at my feet.

As I sat there, I debated whether I should jump in or not. The water looked so beautiful - crystal clear and fresh. But, it was also freezing cold.

But then, after nearly half an hour of deliberation, I suddenly stood up and dove in. It was INSANELY cold, but amazing at the same time. I'm definitely going back!

Sparkly

Lots of the rocks in Val Pellice (the valley where I live) are sparkly like this. This photo was taken without a flash - just sunlight. Beautiful, no?

HUGE dog!

Check out this ridiculously HUGE dog I saw at the pub the other night!

Some friends and I had gone to the local Irish pub to watch the Italia vs. USA soccer match. I must admit, I appreciate the athleticism of soccer, but I wouldn't say it is one of the more exciting sports I've ever watched. Maybe I just haven't lived in Italy long enough to appreciate it properly. But, even if I wasn't all that impressed by the game, the dog sitting with his owner at the table next to us was definitely impressive. I'm sure it weighed more than the guy. It's head came up to the guy's elbow! The pub owners kept giving it loaves of bread to chew on. I think the dog ate at least three during the time we were there. Three whole loves of bread! It was insane!

I want a big dog. Maybe not this big, but still.

I love Finnish!

English: "cheeseburger" - 12 letters; 3 syllables
Finnish: "juustohampurilainen" - 19 letters; 7 syllables

Not convinced? How about "moottorisahamurhaaja" (chainsaw murderer).

Oh wait, don't forget this one: "muukalaisvihaaja" (xenophobe).

And the grand finale... "huippuhyvä porosäilyke" (top quality reindeer spam)!

Beauty and Darkness in Ireland

Several months ago, I had the opportunity to go to Ireland for a few days. The stunning beauty of the place was overwhelming. The rugged green hills were covered in yellow-blooming gorse whipped by the roaring winds that blew off the blue-grey waters of the loch. It rained most of the time I was there, but the storms only added to the fierce beauty. Although I didn't take a single picture while I was there, I found a few photos online that give you a good idea.

However, this inescapable beauty masks a spiritual darkness unlike anything I've ever encountered. The small town where I stayed boasts of having 90% practicing Catholics, yet the joy of the Lord is virtually non-existent. Of the 7,000 people who live in this town, 1,000 are teenagers. During the two days I was there, one of the young girls committed suicide - the 5th teenage suicide in as many years. I've never been in a place where I felt such an oppressive and dark spiritual climate. Please pray for Ireland. Pray that the hope of Christ's salvation will flow through the streets, pushing back the darkness. Pray for Irish believers who struggle against incredible spiritual oppression.

Even more interesting...

Yesterday I posted a YouTube video a fellow missionary friend sent to me (see below). I wasn't super-pleased with the tone of the video, but I thought the facts included were interesting and worth noting. However, I have just received information from several reliable sources suggesting some of these "facts" are incorrect or exaggerated. Please see the following letters:

From Roy Oksnevad, Muslim Ministries, Billy Graham Center, Wheaton College:
I believe that statistics used for North America are inflated (9 million) and the statistics are simplistic, not taking into consideration other immigration or other dynamics than ethnic heritage. Not all peoples from Muslim majority countries in Europe are practicing Muslims and there are a number of Muslims coming to Christ, albeit is small for the moment. Muslims like Colonel Muammar Qaddafi of Libya are known to overstate their case in grandiose terms and what is said should not be taken as fact. (He is also claiming that he will win all of Africa to Islam.) That being said, there is a demographic population shift that is taking place and there will be a culture shift from what we understand Europe to be today. However, to make the leap that Europe will become Muslim is a stretch. To say that Europe will soon be populated by people whose heritage comes from Muslim majority countries is true. Muslims are being shaped by Europe as much as Europe is being shaped by Islam. The first generation is often more resistant to European culture then the second generation which has grown up in the language and culture of Europe.

Conclusion:
  1. The demographic realities are true about the shift from a European white population.
  2. The overwhelming ethnic group are people from Islamic majority countries.
  3. Islam will play a more significant part in Europe.
  4. Secularism and an anti-religious spirit will continue to shape those who live in Europe, including those born in Europe whose background or parentage is from a Muslim majority country.
  5. We are not sure what will happen religiously in Europe.
  6. Conclusion - a wake-up call to evangelism in Europe - YES! The population that we will evangelize will not be those with a legacy of the reformation. We will need to adjust our message to fit the cultural, religious and ethnic make up of the population in Europe, just as we need to continually make adjustments in our work in evangelism in every other place in the world.

From Diane Moder, Aglow International Islamic Awareness and Education Director:

On Monday, April 27 I viewed a DVD called “Muslim Demographics.” After seeing it, the gentleman involved in producing it was contacted. He asked us not to use it because some of the information is incorrect. He said the material is currently being updated to correct the information.

I have received many emails this week with this YouTube link and it is apparent that it is now being sent across the body of Christ. Because of this I want to alert and inform the leaders in our ministry that the information in various places on this video is incorrect and thereby brings a conclusion that is not accurate. At this point, until the DVD is updated I trust you will not use this information or forward the YouTube link. If you already have received this link and information and forwarded this link to others, please feel free to share this email to tell them that the data is incorrect and the material is being updated.

As leaders we want to make certain that the information we share and forward is truthful and is able to be verified. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to get in touch with me.

Blessings,
Diane Moder

Once again, I am guilty of spreading information via my blog which is incorrect or misleading. This was never my intention and I hope you will accept my apologies.

My blog is a place where I share bits and tidbits of my life as well as things I find interesting. I am not attempting to promote a particular agenda, but to create an atmosphere for the sharing of thoughts and ideas. I am always open to the comments of others and I appreciate my friends who alerted me to the fallacies of the Muslim Demographics video I posted yesterday. Thank you.

As you go about your day to day lives, please take this lesson from me: be careful what you believe.

Needed: Accountants to change the world!

Photo from Sim1 Travels.

The OM team in Orebro, Sweden, desperately needs a new finance manager. Their current finance manager leaves in just over one month, and they need someone to fill the gap.

Who are they looking for? Ideally a qualified accountant with some experience in accounting for non-profit organisations, BUT they would love to hear from anyone with an accounting qualification, regardless of their experience. A university graduate who is willing to take on a steep learning curve would even be OK. A finisher would be fantastic! Sweden would love for someone who can can make a 2 year commitment, but if you can get there before the middle of July, they'll take you for a minimum of 3 months.

And to sweeten the deal, Sweden is offering a substantial support subsidy for the first year – not full support, but enough to make it easier for you to come as soon as possible. (Most people joining OM have to raise financial support to cover their living expenses, usually through gifts from home churches and other supporters.)

This is a key role for OM – providing financial support to relief and development projects around the world. As the finance manager, you'd be involved in overseeing budgets and reporting for projects at the main office as well as assisting project managers in reporting outcomes to donors. As a key element of the project management team, you'd be one of the first to hear of the great things God is doing through projects around the world.

By the way, you don't need to speak Swedish for this job.

So, whatcha think? Are you looking for a new challenge? Do you know someone who might be interested in this opportunity?

The Case of the Missing Purse

My mom is particular about purses. Unlike me, she has one purse which she wears until it literally falls off. Then begins the dreaded ordeal of finding another one (none of which are ever as good as the one they replaced). So, naturally I was delighted when she found a "perfect traveling purse" at the Saturday market in Pinerolo, Italy.

Apparently, this "perfect traveling purse" did a good job. It was spotted alongside a goat in S. Asia about 1 week after purchase.

However, after a thorough perusal of all subsequent photos, the purse remains absent.

No purse in Venice...

No purse in Milan...

Hmm...

Perhaps the goat took it.

A new spin on potty training

The Italians are all about bidets, apparently. While at the mall, my mom and I were surprised to find a special little stall for kids - complete with a miniature sink, toilet, and BIDET! Seriously, it was tiny! Could kids that small even use a bidet properly? I guess there's no harm in starting the bidet training early...

An afternoon in Paris...

Paris is a beautiful city. After all the Italian cities I've visited recently, with their brightly painted stucco walls and terra cotta tiled roofs, I was intrigued by the monochromatic colors of Paris. The white/grey stone buildings with their black tile roofs were such a contrast to the warm colors of Italy. Different, but still stunning.

The Eiffel Tower is... TALL!

In April, I had the opportunity to go to Paris with my friend Sarah. Naturally, we went to see the infamous Eiffel Tower...

I guess I never realized just how TALL the Eiffel Tower is. It sounds tacky and touristy, but I'm pretty sure it was my favorite part of Paris.
